How To Be A Leader

Rule #1, Stop Trash Talking

An important part of being a leader is maintaining harmony between co-workers and subordinates. This process is often derailed when office politics turns to in-fighting, back stabbing, and trash talking. Yes, trash talking, the kind your mother warned you about. [clip of wwf]

As a responsible leader, you must eliminate trash talking at the onset. First, if you have a criticism about someone, never talk about it with colleagues and coworkers, who might spread the fact that you are talking about them, or embellish what you said. Address it with them privately, and always in a positive and constructive manner.

If someone consistently arrives late, dont say, WTF dude? Start with voicing concern for their personal well-being, such as, Is everything alright? How are things at home? or Yo dawg, wut is up with your shizzle as of late?

This technique is successful whether leading an office, a volunteer group, or the 72nd street angels.

Ask the right questions. You should ask questions that cannot be answered with a simple "Yes" or "No". Ask questions that enable your peers to express their feelings, ideas, fears. Your peers are very creative (hopefully) - let them talk to you and share their ideas, let them think and create!

Once youve opened a dialogue, express your concerns. Dont use terms such as Cant, Lacking, or Disappointment to your parents. Always phrase your concern as a pro-active suggestion, such as, I need you to come in earlier from now on.

The second part of this equation is talk from others. When you hear of someone talking about a peer in a negative way, pull that person aside, and talk with them. Remember, you are in a leadership position, and you have to be stern without being condescending.

Say to the trash talker and backstabber, Larry is a hard worker, and I dont think that kind of talk is appropriate. Or Those kind of discussions are counterproductive to all of us. Or Shut the **** up mother ****er.

By confronting problems early in a non-confrontational way youll eliminate any possible backlash later.
